Portuguese

As the third most widely spoken European language in the world, the ability to communicate in Portuguese enhances career opportunities in fields such as finance, business, engineering, hospitality and tourism, marketing, education, interpreting and translation as well as humanitarian organizations.

Portuguese is the mother tongue of around 250 million people and an official language in 10 countries, including China, where a community of Portuguese speakers is present in Macau. It is one of the major languages of the world playing an important role in international relations as a working language of the European Union, its Latin American equivalent Mercosul and the African Union.

The volume of trade between China and Portuguese-speaking countries has grown remarkably in recent years making China the principal trading partner of Brazil and Angola China’s largest trading partner in Africa. With approximately 200 million people, Brazil has the largest population and economy of South America. As trade links between Brazil and other countries grow, proficiency in Portuguese is becoming very important.

The Portuguese Programme was established in 1999 with support from the Camões Institute, and its Asian arm, the Portuguese Institute of the Orient in Macau. The Minor in Portuguese was introduced in the 2003-2004 academic year and The University of Hong Kong remains the only university in Hong Kong where students can minor in Portuguese.
